Description
This Gil Evans-influenced composition will conjure up a distinctive period in jazz history. The smooth, modal sounds will mesmerize your audience. Give your horn players a challenge with an opening section performed a cappella. Put your trumpet section on display with a challenging trumpet soli. Your lead alto player will take huge strides with ample solo space.
I composed this chart when I was living in Port Townsend, WA. I was teaching middle school and managing the local jazz festival. While I lived there, a bar opened downtown called Sirens. It possessed a certain speakeasy quality. You had to walk up a couple of flights of stairs and go to the back of the building to get to the place. It was an old Victorian building and the bar had a deck over the waterfront. Despite its out of the way location, the locals seemed to find their way.
